OTHER SUBJECTS

The artistic interests of Laurence A. Campbell extended far beyond the city streets and rural landscapes for which he became best known. Possessing a keen eye for beauty in its many forms, he found inspiration in an extraordinary variety of subjects, from vibrant floral still lifes to the tranquil waterways and picturesque coastal towns of southern New Jersey. Regardless of the setting, his paintings reveal a consistent fascination with color, light, and atmosphere.

Flowers were among his favorite subjects, particularly lush arrangements of sunflowers and other colorful blooms displayed in vases. In these richly textured still lifes, Campbell's bold, expressive brushwork and brilliant palette reflect his admiration for the great Impressionist masters. Equally captivating were his paintings of the New Jersey shore, especially Cape May and Ocean City, where sandy beaches, historic architecture, and the changing moods of the Atlantic provided endless inspiration. Closer to home, the peaceful waters of Cooper River, dotted with graceful sailboats, offered another favorite subject that he returned to time and again.
